Il y a à peine deux semaines, lorsque nous nous sommes rencontrés dans sa ville de Shawinigan, il était comme il est toujours; il marchait avec l'entrain d'un homme deux fois moins âgé que lui et montrait toute cette force, cette vigueur et ce sens de l'humour que les Canadiens ont pu apprécier », a rappelé M. Ignatieff, qui avait alors lui-même goûté à la « Shawinigan handshake ».
